How to Donate to Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

This is a note from Rev. Susan Karlson:

The Unitarian Church of Staten Island — at 312 Fillmore Street, Staten Island, NY 10301, is a donation staging site for people in need on Midland Beach, New Dorp and the South Shore.

As of early Saturday evening, the following items are needed (we found out the needs change constantly, as do the places that need supplies and donations, but we are in touch with StatenIsland.Recovers.org and are getting everything where it needs to go):

Flashlights, batteries, candles and matches, toiletries, non-perishable food, water, cleaning supplies, diapers, infant formula, and other baby items.

Gloves and handwarmers that you put in gloves were needed and will probably be useful. They reached a saturation point for blankets at one point
but may need them again at some time. Adult clothes are not needed now; they have plenty at most sites and we have quite a lot of adult clothes.

Pastor Raymond told me that they need cash donations to help people directly and immediately (checks made out to them with the memo line to read “Sandy relief”).

Crossroads Church has been going door to door assessing what people need
and delivering it to them. We can get those donations to Crossroads as well.

Tomorrow’s church service is entitled, “After the Storm”. It will be a healing service, honoring the lives lost and the volunteers and a chance for people to share stories of struggle, recovery, hope and community. Please join us for this service of renewal and love.
